Born Again

You hear Christians bang on about 'salvation' and being 'born again.' So what is all this stuff about? As a Christian myself I'll try my best to explain.

The bible is always a good place to start so if you have one nearby, grab it and we will see what God's own words say about it. It doesn't matter if you don't have a bible because I'll write down what the verses say. I don't want to throw too many verses at you at once so I'll just cover seven short, easy pieces - a nice round number. Find the book of 'Romans' in your bible if you have one as this is where we will base this short study.

Romans chapter 3 verse 10 says, 'There is none righteous, no, not one.' Also, Romans 3 v. 23 says, 'For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.' Everyone (including myself) has messed up and done wrong which is what we call sinning. Lets face it, anyone who says that they don't sin are kidding themselves. The only one to have walked earth that hasn't sinned is Jesus - God's own Son. God hates sin. If you flip to Romans 6 v. 23 it says, 'For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.' Before Jesus came and died on the cross for our sins - for me and for you - the penalty of sinning was death. Jesus paid this price. Why would God choose to let His own Son go through this for a bunch of sinners like us? John 3 v. 16 says, 'For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.' Simple answer then - God loves us all!

So what is eternal life? It's exactly what it says. 'Eternal' is forever. You have a choice though - eternal life with Jesus in heaven, or eternal life in hell. So it's easy - heaven or hell forever. It's your choice and you only get one shot at it here on earth - you can't make up your mind once you are standing at heavens gates! I know which I prefer and that is why I am saved.

So what do you have to do to get saved or born again? Romans 10 v. 17 says, 'Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.' You've heard the word by reading this far so what are you going to do about it? Your choice. God's word even tells us how to get His precious gift of salvation. Look at Romans 10 vs. 9-10 which says, 'If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.' So it's easy, and in my opinion a gift well worth taking. However, if you decide to give your life to Jesus don't take it too lightly - pray it and mean it. So if you're ready to take God's gift then simply pray something like the following prayer - make it personal and yours.

"Jesus, I have come to know that you are the Son of God - the King of Kings and Lord of all. I also realise that you came and died for my sins because you love me. I'm a sinner and therefore I ask for your forgiveness. I give my life to you. I choose to accept your precious gift of salvation. Thank you Lord."

If you are still not sure that God will accept you, don't worry. Romans 10 v. 13 says, 'Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' If He can pay for our sins in the way that He did, and save me, then He can save you too. He's bigger and His love for us is greater than any reason why you may be holding back.

If you prayed the prayer and meant it then I thank God for your new life. So what next? First tell someone. Find yourself a good, lively, Spirit filled church. You will know in your spirit if it's the right place for you. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit - another one of His amazing gifts.

I pray this will have been some help. May the one, true God bless you.
